A Little Bit of Holiday Magic - Review and Giveaway

Review by Marlene Engel
It probably wasn’t the smartest decision to drive across country just before Christmas, but Grace was determined to start a new life for her and her three year old son, Liam.  Widowed at the age of twenty three, Grace knows all too well what it feels like to lose someone you love.  But it’s time to pick herself up and move on … literally.  With her son in tow, they brave a blizzard destined for Astoria, Oregon.  But as they make their way through Mount Hood, her truck spins out and hits a snow bank.  Luckily neither of them were hurt and they were able to find shelter at a house close by.

Bill Paulson is a fire fighter and wilderness first responder.  He’s used to being thrown into difficult situations.  But when Grace knocks at his door soaking wet from the storm and carrying her son in her arms, no amount of training could’ve prepared him for this.  Bill enjoys his bachelor life, not wanting to settle down or have children anytime soon.  But spending time with Grace’s son has brought on unexpected feelings that he never knew existed.

As the snow continues to fall and Grace has no other option than to stay at Bill’s house, thoughts and feelings that have been suppressed start to surface.  However, she’s hesitant to allow herself to get close.  Can Grace push aside her fears and allow herself to know Bill better?  Or will she pack up Liam and continue their journey to Astoria once the snow ends?

Christmas is my favorite time of year and I love reading Christmas books during the holiday season.  A Little Bit of Holiday Magic is like a warm fire on a cold winter’s day.  It’s the perfect book to snuggle up on the couch with a blanket and hot cup of cocoa and read!  The story kept me interested and the characters were so relatable.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone looking to read an amazing holiday romance.

I've always been a fan of fairy tales and "happily ever afters", but I'd never read a category romance until my senior year of high school when my A.P. English teacher, Mrs. Cooper, had the class study genre fiction. She assigned each of us a Harlequin Romance to read. Mine was set in the Canary Islands and I couldn't wait to read another one. And another and another. I was hooked. Needless to say, I owe Penny Cooper a debt of gratitude. And yes, we do keep in touch!

After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in mechanical engineering, I worked for Allied Signal analyzing engine performance in Phoenix, Arizona, and my love of romance novels continued to grow. One day, I decided to write a romance of my own. Easier said than done I quickly learned, but I discovered the Desert Rose Chapter of Romance Writers of America and realized how little I knew about writing romances.

After three years in Phoenix (Tempe, actually), I began to hate the Arizona summers. Who cares if it's a dry heat? Anything over a hundred and ten is still hot. So I took at job at United Airlines in San Francisco. I was still analyzing jet engine performance, but now I had travel benefits. I spent five years traveling the globe. My love for writing romances also grew.

Writing became a passion, and the few hours spent at the computer during lunchtime and in the evenings weren't nearly enough. With lots of prodding and support from my husband of six months whom I met working at UAL, I decided to follow my dream and write full-time.

Lovers At Heart - Blurb, Review & Giveaway

Lovers at Heart
The Bradens Series Book One
By: Melissa Foster

Blurb
Handsome, wealthy resort owner Treat Braden is used to getting what he wants. When Max Armstrong walked into his life six months earlier, he saw right through the efficient and capable façade she wore like a shield, to the sweet, sensual woman who lay beneath. She sparked an unfamiliar desire in him for more than a one-night stand, leaving his heart reeling and his blood boiling. But one mistake caused her to turn away, and now, after six months of longing for the one woman he cannot have, he’s going home to try to forget her all together.

Max Armstrong has a successful career, a comfortable lifestyle, and she’s never needed a man to help her find her way—until Treat Braden caught her attention at a wedding in Nassau, causing a surge of emotions too reminiscent of the painful past she’d spent years trying to forget. Max will do anything to avoid reliving that pain—including forgoing her toe-curling, heart-pounding desire for Treat.

When a chance encounter turns into a night of intense passion, Treat realizes that the mistake he made six months earlier may cause him to lose Max completely. He will do everything within his power to win her heart forever—and Max is forced to face her hurtful past head on for the man she cannot help but love.

Review by Marlene Engel
Treat knew that he had to get away from Nassau for a bit.  If he spent one more minute at his resort, he would go nuts.  What better way to unwind and take his mind off of work than a weekend at his father’s ranch?  But was it really work that he was needing a break from, or the woman who’s been occupying his thoughts for the past six months … Max Armstrong?  Treat met Max when she was organizing a wedding that was taking place at his resort.  There was something about her that made his heart thunder in his chest.  But it was his own fears that kept him from acting on those feelings.

You can imagine Treat’s surprise when he spots Max while back home in Colorado.  He knew that Max was friends with his cousin, Blake, but didn’t put two and two together that she may live in the same area.  Seeing her brought back the rush of emotions.  He knew that he wasn’t going to let this chance at getting to know Max pass him by and go through another six months of mental anguish.

The connection that Treat and Max share is undeniable, but demons from their past makes it hard for them to fully move forward.  Both have been hurt in the in different ways and are guarding their hearts, but can they let the walls down long enough to give their relationship a chance?  Or are those walls too tough to break down?

Lovers at Heart is the fourth of nine books in the Love in Bloom Series.  It focuses mainly on Max Armstrong and Treat Braden, but also introduces you to the rest of the Braden family.  I really enjoy how the characters are all strong, successful and family oriented, yet they have their own individual struggles that they’re trying to overcome.  And, like the three previous books in the series, Lovers at Heart does not disappoint in the steamy love scenes category!  Once again, Melissa Foster has provided us with an amazing story that’s nearly impossible to put down, with an alpha male who you will fall head over heels in love with!

Spirits of Christmas - Blurb, Excerpt & Review

Spirits of Christmas: A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol

Blurb
At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

EXCERPT
‘Hiya, Jude!’
The voice emerged from the door, and Jude’s head whipped round as if drawn by a string.
‘Hiya, Jude,’ the voice repeated cheerfully. Unexpectedly, it launched into the first line of one of Jude’s most favourite songs. Jude once again sank onto the bed, his legs refusing to carry him with the shock of this second apparition.
‘Is this really you?’
For a moment, Jude’s second otherworldly visitor abandoned his song and remained silent, motionless, allowing Jude to take a good, long look. The sideburns, the nose, the defined chin, the round glasses were clearly visible despite the spirit’s transparent appearance. Everything about this figure was familiar, yet nothing was quite as it should have been. It was as though Jude was looking at a hologram, a distorted, stretched vision where nothing quite fitted together.
Nonetheless, Jude found his voice. ‘Oh my God, it is you!’
Excitement made his exclamation strong and clear. The figure flinched at the sudden burst of noise, but Jude ploughed on. ‘This is…this is totally unreal. I mean, imagine this—here’s me in my bedroom, and there’s you, come to visit me.’
‘I’m not who you think you see,’ the apparition interrupted. ‘I’m the Ghost of Christmas Past.’

Review by Marlene Engel
Jude, the lead singer and one of the founding members of the rock and roll band, The Blood Roses, is on a downward spiral.  A once promising band that everyone was trying to book, was now getting booed off stage and kicked out of clubs.  In a fit of rage, Jude lashes out at his band members, telling them that he doesn’t need them and would be better off alone.  When he heads to his flat in hopes of his girlfriend being there to console him, he is surprised to find that she is not there and has taken most of her things with her.  Cursing her aloud and claiming that he’s better off alone, he dozes off after consuming several beers.

When Jude awakes to find a ghostly being above him, he’s convinced that he’s either dreaming or that the beer that he had consumed is making him see things.  The being tells him that he’s the Ghost of Forewarning.  He informs Jude the he will be visited by three more ghosts that night.  One from his past, one from the present and one from the future.  What Jude doesn’t know, is that these visitors come in the form of ghosts of rock and roll.  Can Jude change his selfish ways before Christmas morning?  Or will be forced to live a life of loneliness?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern day, rock and roll rendition of A Christmas Carol.  Nicky Wells puts a fun spin on this Christmas classic.  I really enjoyed the characters and thought that the ghosts of rock and roll were cleverly written.  With the holidays coming, this is the perfect book to sit by the fire and read.  I definitely recommend this book to others.  It’s a fun book that is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit!

The Bitches of Brooklyn - Excerpt & Guest Post

Excerpt
As deliveries went, this one was somewhere between a balloon telegram and a bulletproof vest wrapped around a dead fish. Most gift baskets arrived with cards bearing congratulations or condolences. Rarely were they sent with the simple two-line message Jane Monaghan stared at, then read, in disbelief, a second time.
A skinny delivery boy hovered in the doorway, the screen door flapping and creaking as he shifted his weight. Jane fumbled in her handbag for a tip. Why did she never have singles when she needed them? As she poked through the tissues, keys and various black electronics cases in her voluminous bag, the boy peered inside the house, curious about the women renting the old Beninger place. He remembered the first year they came. His mother had warned him to keep his distance and his father had slipped him a sly wink that he'd been too young to interpret.
They weren't bad looking, neither young nor old, that gray area between youth and invisibility. Still good for a nooner, he fantasized, using an expression he’d heard his uncle Billy use, if he could cut one from the herd. Especially the small, dark-haired one sprawled on the loveseat near the fireplace. She had a nubby throw tossed over one leg but the other was exposed – tan, taut and barely covered by denim cutoffs. Still pretty hot, even if she looked old enough to have been his babysitter - and after all, what boy hadn't had that fantasy?
The hot one and the boy made eye contact. Having been on the receiving end of similar looks for close to twenty years – longer than he’d been alive – it took Tina Ruggiero all of thirty seconds to read his mind.
“Come back in a few years, sonny. You’re not entirely hopeless but, let’s wait until that acne clears up.”
The boy’s naughty daydream evaporated, his face reddened and he reverted to bumbling, pimply errand boy. His eyes grew watery. He even seemed shorter, if that was possible. Jane abandoned her search for singles, shoved a five in his direction and kicked the storm door shut.
“A day without a verbal castration is like a day without sunshine?”
“Come on,” Tina said. “He deserved it – gawking like that. Half the people in this town think we're practicing witchcraft and the other half think we’re gay. Not that I don't think you're all cute. I just wanted to set the record straight.”
Jane wasn’t sure the exchange wouldn’t have the opposite effect, convincing him she was a witch, only he’d spell it with a “b.” Which was fitting since that's what they'd been dubbed a long time ago when they were teens, The Bitches of Brooklyn. Were they really? Depended who you asked.
“A new wrinkle has been added to our weekend,” Jane said.
"Oh no please, not another one. I already have a new wrinkle, that's why I cut bangs."
"I wondered what the new hairstyle was about."
Jane carried the oversized basket to the wooden dining table where Clare Didrikson and Rachel Weiner, two of her closest friends, sat with their morning coffees.
The table and chairs were like all the furniture in the rented house - ancient wood or wicker upon which thousands of summer memories had been made, or brand new, from the discount store, because who would buy good furniture for a house through which total strangers traipsed for three months out of every year? Or suffered from too much sun and too much damp. Jane pulled out a chair and read the card aloud to the group.
"It's a joke," Tina said. She flung off the blanket and hopped over on her one good ankle to join them. "Just like her to bail at the last minute and then pull a stunt like this. She’s probably laughing her ass off somewhere, ordering the next fruit basket with the next cryptic message. Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes! Go to the hayfield, there’ll be a volcanic rock that has no earthly business in a Maine hayfield. She’s always so melodramatic. Can't she just admit something better came up?"
It was not the first time their missing friend had cancelled at the last minute even though the dates were fixed well in advance. The four were always understanding but there was always a trace of resentment, too. As if the others were expected to understand that the fifth woman’s time was more valuable than theirs.
The four women settled around the table in the weather-beaten Cape Cod bungalow they'd rented every summer for the last six years. They met for the same late summer weekend when husbands and partners were otherwise engaged, either of their own accord or dispatched so the women wouldn't feel guilty about leaving four men, one daughter, one veterinary practice, and two businesses for much girl talk and more alcohol in an ocean beach setting far removed from their Brooklyn beginnings.
Initially, they had played "remember when" and speculated on what had happened to still-missing friends from the old neighborhood. That first year Rachel brought her laptop and their old high school yearbook, and between drinks and steamers they Googled and giggled over former boyfriends and teachers, most of whom had lost their hair, gotten heavy, or somehow morphed into ordinary mortals instead of the brooding geniuses and bohemian heartthrobs they’d once seemed. After that, it was agreed - no laptops at The Weekend.
But it wasn't all about the old days. The five women had forged new friendships. What felt better than familiar but new - the safety net of people who knew your background and your history, but, because of the time spent apart, brought the freshness of anecdotes and stories you hadn't heard a hundred times before. And they’d helped each other professionally, with contacts and as trustworthy soundingboards.
Clare reached over to read the card for herself, looking for...what? Some explanation hidden between the lines? Some tone or nuance conveyed in the elegant script of an anonymous clerk in a gift shop? She chewed on her lower lip but said nothing.
Jane tugged on the purple ribbon at the top of the basket, untying the bow and noisily releasing the twisted cellophane. She flattened the ribbon and wound it around four fingers as if saving it for some future use, which wasn't likely since they'd all be home in a few days. A hidden staple pierced one slim, unmanicured index finger and she sucked on it while poking through the basket with her undamaged hand.
"At least she sprang for the good stuff.” Jane held up a red foil-covered brick. “Real cheese, not cheese product."
"And candy," Rachel said. "Just what we need."
Tina and Jane plundered the basket, Jane moving through the items and inspecting ingredients. "Cream crackers, no partially hydrogenated anything so far." Jane was co-owner of a small bakery called Sweet Dreams and paid attention to such things. Tina wasn't so picky. Two grunts and an arched eyebrow told her the others were less appreciative of their missing friend's nutritional considerations. "Belgian chocolates. Scottish cookies," Jane said, still sucking on her punctured finger.
"Please don’t get blood on anything," Tina said. "If there are shortbread cookies, I’ve got dibs. I don't care if they have lard in them but I draw the line at bodily fluids.”
Despite Rachel's protestations, the chocolate would disappear first. No chance to melt or develop that mysterious white stuff around the edges. Then the cheese, the crackers and the fruit, one step up from artificial and typically chosen not for taste but for their ability to retain an unblemished appearance despite being shipped thousands of miles. All the food would go, even the boring sucking candies, and all that would remain was a tasteful brown basket, some purple ribbon and the note -

Apologies for the short notice but I won't be making our little reunion this year. I've run off with one of your men.

This book is very different from your previous ones.  What made you decide to go in a different writing direction?
This is a great question - and one that followers of my Dirty Business mystery series are asking a lot! I love mysteries and I've grown very fond of the fictional town of Springfield Connecticut and the warm - mostly wonderful - characters I've created who inhabit it.  At their core, all of my mysteries are about friendships, marriages, relationships and what we will do for the people we love. Searching for a missing friend, proving a wife's innocence, uncovering the story of an ages-old romance. But because they included crimes, usually a murder, they were called traditional mysteries.

At some point last year I needed a break from killing people! It's an unfortunate fact that a great many mysteries these days rely on the ever-more gruesome plotline of a psycho victimizing, torturing and killing young women. The flip side of that is the all-too-casual "Is that a body, oh rats, I dropped a stitch" storyline. I think one of the reasons the book Gone Girl was so popular was that it conformed to neither of those tropes.

I believe there are plenty of mysteries within relationships - ones that don't usually involve weapons and duct tape - and I'm enjoying writing about these now, whatever publishers decide to call them. But I'm already missing Paula Holliday, Lucy Cavanaugh, Babe Chinnery, Rolanda Knox and the other gals from Springfield so it's likely that I will find a way to merge the two. Chicklits with some mystery and mysteries with strong, fun women who appreciate a good glass of wine, a nice six-pack on a man and the perfect black boots.

Love Waltzes In - Book Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway

Love Waltzes In
By: Alana Albertson

Blurb
To her millions of fans, ballroom champion Selena Marcil seems to have the perfect life: a great dance partner, a hit reality show, and celebrity perks. But underneath the glamorous ball gowns, Selena longs to find someone to share her life with when the stage lights dim.
Selena’s childhood sweetheart, Bret Lord, hung up his dance shoes after winning two national titles with her as a teenager, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He never saw his former fiancée again, except on television and on the cover of men’s magazines. Ten years and three deployments later, Bret gets an offer to audition for Selena’s dance show. When the Marine Corps gives him temporary leave to appear on the series, Bret can’t refuse the quick cash that will enable him to provide financially for the widow of his buddy, even if it does mean coming face to face with his past.

When Bret shows up at her national championship, Selena is shocked. For years she searched for him to no avail. After spending time with Bret, Selena realizes despite their past romance, they have no future. He has no desire to live under a spotlight and she has no desire to leave it. Can Selena and Bret recognize when Love Waltzes In?

Review by Marlene Engel

Selena Marcil has been dancing since she was a small child.  It has been her dream to win the dance competition in Blackpool, England.  But currently, she is one of the dance stars on the popular show, Dancing Under the Stars.  She likes that being on the show helps to pay the bills and gives her the chance to stay in top competitive shape, but her hopes were that she’d be in a relationship and have a family by now.  She questions if pursuing her dream of dance hindered her chance at what she really desires in life.

Bret Lord is a former dancer turned Marine.  In the past, he was engaged to Selena.  He had thought that their relationship was strong enough to last through his change of career, but Selena’s hurt feelings caused her to break off their relationship.

When Bret gets offered a chance to represent the Marines, and be a contestant on Dancing Under the Stars, he knows that this is the chance for him to make some good money that can help out his deceased friend’s family.  What he didn’t expect was to be partnered with his former fiancé who he hasn’t seen for ten years now.

As a fan of the popular show, Dancing With The Stars, I knew I’d enjoy this book.  I liked how the author gave the readers a behind the scenes look at the world of dance and made you feel like you were right there dancing along with them.   The connection that Selena and Bret had was palpable and had me rooting for them to get back together.  Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.  I would recommend it to anyone who’s a fan of Dancing With The Stars … or just romance in general!

Excerpt
Staff Sergeant Bret Lord sat on the dirty floor of his tent, going through the day’s mail: the latest Men’s Fitness magazine from his sister, a care package from his mom. He ripped open the package—socks, lip balm, sunflower seeds, and a thin letter that contained an old magazine clipping.

Dear Bret,
I miss you very much. Benny asked me to send you this article. I really wish you would consider his offer. Please stay safe.
Love, Mom

He swallowed hard. A neon sticky pressed on the wrinkled page had a note scrawled on it from his former master dance coach.
Bret, m’boy,

We’ll make it worth your time.

Cheers, Benny.

Thumbing the edge of the article, Bret stared at the sixteen-year-old boy in the picture and could barely recognize himself. His shoulder length, wavy blond hair was slicked back, not shorn in a “high and tight” like his current haircut. No signs of the tattoos or muscles that currently defined his body. Golden skin stained from a bottle, not the harsh sun of Iraq. His arms were wrapped around a gorgeous, curvy young girl with long jet-black hair. The jade Latin gown she wore matched the color of her almond-shaped eyes.

Bret tossed the article aside and removed his nine-mil pistol from his holster to clean it.

Lance Corporal Hernandez walked by Bret and snatched the article off his cot. After staring at it, Hernandez’s face brightened.

“Hey, Staff Sergeant, this you?”

“No, it’s my clone who’s also named Bret Lord.” Bret slid the rail back on his weapon and began disassembling it.

“Staff Sergeant, you know Selena Marcil? Did you hit that?”

“Shut up, Hernandez, or the one getting hit will be you—with the butt stock of my rifle.” Bret grabbed the paper out of Hernandez’s hands, and smacked him on the side of the head. The kid didn’t flinch.

“Staff Sergeant Twinkle Toes. Hey—can you hook me up with Selena? I’ll be her boy toy. I love her. Man, she’s smoking. Has the nicest ass. Not like all those skinny, Russian chicks on that show.” He nodded to himself with an eyebrow dancing. “Selena’s on my list. She’s Latina, too. We’d be perfect together. What was she doing with a gringo like you?”

“Hernandez, you’re way out of line.” Bret reassembled his pistol.

“My bad, Staff Sergeant.”

Bret grabbed the article, his pack, and his rifle. It was impossible to get some privacy in the tent. His only option was to sit outside in a sandstorm but even that sounded like a welcome retreat from his immature men. He walked about five hundred feet, then plopped down in the hot sand.

The red sky hung above him, thick from smoke from the nearby town. Bret struggled to catch a glimpse of the distant mountains. Sand seemed to pelt down from the heavens, blinding him and settling into every crevice in his body. He closed his eyes against the sting of the sand, and turned his thoughts to Selena. Was she the diva the tabloids made her out to be? Even after ten years, he could almost smell her buttery-coconut scent. A welcome change from the overflowing shitters, toxic diesel, and stench of his fellow Marines who hadn’t bathed in three weeks.
