Now I See You - Review, 12 Things About ... & A Giveaway

Review by Marlene Engel
What would you do if you were told that you only had so many years before your vision would be taken away?  Many would be in denial, others may fall into a depressed state, but for Nicole Kear, she chose to make the best of the time that she was able to see.  As she said in the book, she chose to carpe diem.  She traveled the world, joined clown school and overall just enjoyed life.  But she didn’t tell others about her soon to be vision loss.  Instead, she chose to keep it a secret.  Not even some of her closest friends knew about it.  They did notice that things were a bit off with Nicole at times.  Bumping into things, not accepting an outstretched hand to shake when meeting a new person or not acknowledging a child when they were right in front of her.  It wasn’t until she came clean to friends and family about her diagnosis that these instances started to make sense.  And it was in this admittance to her loved ones that she was going through a life altering change that she was able to start to accept it herself.

I first heard about this book when my local library was hosting an author event.  I was intrigued by this woman’s story not only for her courage and positive outlook on life, but also because I had a daughter who was blind.  I wanted to hear from another how they went about their everyday life while dealing with compromised sight.  In listening to her speak about her diagnosis, how she chose to deal with it and how she’s doing now, I was in awe of this woman.  Her story was so profound, her words encouraging, and I left there feeling inspired.

This story is about courage, strength and acceptance, but told with such humor that you can only look at Nicole with respect, not sympathy.  Such an uplifting and empowering book about a strong, unique woman.  This is an absolute must read for all.

“12 Things About Nicole Kear”

1. I love the word "Darjeeling." There was a time, back in my buoyant, whimsical youth, that I'd call my husband that, in lieu of "darling." Consequently, I get inordinately excited when I can order that kind of tea at coffee shops.

2. I am a terrible typist. Embarrassingly bad. To the extent that you could devise the world's best drinking game, if you did a shot every time you spotted a typo in one of my emails.

3. I buy really cheap, designer knock-off sunglasses. You can tell they are knock-offs because after two days, the DG insignia on the sides falls off. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that doesn't happen with real Dolce and Gabbanas.

4. Red and purple are my favorite colors.

5. That said, I'm pretty color-blind so, who knows what my favorite colors really are.

6. Two different strangers have asked me if I was a professional singer, and these comments, for no apparent reason, are the most validating things I've ever heard. I recount these stories to my kids far too often as proof that I'm a great singer (they disagree). The first was a man standing behind me at church, who enjoyed my rendition of "Hallelujah," which I sing with relish. The second was a man selling fruit on a street corner in Manhattan who overheard me singing a made-up song to my toddler to keep her quiet. I will thank both of them when I accept my Grammy. They were the only people who believed in me.

7. I know now how the word "misled" is pronounced but for many years, I thought it was pronounced "my-zeld" so, secretly, I say it that way in my head.

8. I wish I had tried dying my hair platinum blond and I fear now I'm too old to pull it off.

9. I love raw chestnuts. Like, as much as Rapunzel's mother loved radishes.

10. When I was a kid, I almost ate a spider. I don't know why. I'm still a little traumatized by this.

11. I'm currently obsessed with the Ella Fitzgerald version of "Paper Moon" but my favorite cover of it is the one sung by my three-year-old.

12. The only way I can bear to do dishes is while listening to an audiobook. Try it. It just might change your life.

Discovering Delilah - Review & Giveaway

In DISCOVERING DELILAH…

After the death of her parents on the day of her college graduation, Delilah Armstrong thought she could finally follow her heart and come out to her closest friends, but the guilt of going against her parents’ beliefs haunts her. The feelings she has for her best friend, Ashley, are stronger than anything she’s felt before, but Delilah has never even kissed a girl, and fear stops her at every turn.

Ashley Carver promised herself that she would never again date another girl who wasn’t out, but that was before she met intoxicatingly sweet and sexy Delilah.

When another girl offers to teach Delilah the ropes, it changes Delilah’s whole world and gives her the courage to go after the only girl she really wants. But coming out isn’t as easy as Delilah imagined, and moving past her parents’ death and the feelings of guilt she is left with is even harder. The intense passion between Ashley and Delilah is too strong to deny, but coming together means risking everything.

Discovering Delilah is an edgy, evocative, romantic story of friendship, family, and the courage to love.

Review by Marlene Engel
Over the years, the definition of ‘relationship’ has evolved.  With more interracial, same-sex and mixed faith relationships, society is starting to accept that love comes in different varieties.  But, for Delilah, growing up in an extremely conservative home with parents who weren’t shy about expressing their distaste over same sex relationships, she was forced to conceal her sexuality.  In the past, she had even dated guys to rule out her attraction to them and keep her family and friends from finding out her secret.

Months after her parents’ untimely death, Delilah is still haunted by the beliefs her parents tried instilling on her and her brother, Wyatt.  But living in Harborside, where there is a high gay population, makes her wonder why her parents chose there of all places to live and start a business.

As Delilah continues to conceal her sexuality, her feelings for her friend, Ashley, grows.  She’s never had a ‘girlfriend’ nor has she had any intimate contact with a girl.  Unsure of how to proceed, and even more unsure if Ashley is even into girls, Delilah is more confused than even.  But one night, after her feelings for Ashley become so strong that she feels as if she might explode, she gets the courage to tell Ashley how she feels.  She was surprised to learn that Ashley reciprocates her feelings.

Being in a first time relationship with a girl, Delilah is still not willing to fully disclose her sexuality.  This not only takes a toll on her, but also puts a strain on her new relationship.  But will Delilah be able to break the ties that her parents had on her before she loses the love of her life?  Or will her insecurities and past be too much for her to release?

It still surprises me that, in this day and age, so many people still have prejudices over nonconventional relationships.  It’s hard enough to find love, but who are we to judge in what form it comes in?  In Discovering Delilah, Melissa Foster does a great job addressing the (still) sensitive subject of same sex relationships and the stereotypes, prejudices and sometimes even consequences of being in one.  But this book doesn’t only focus on that one topic.  You will also see the beauty of friendship, the love of family and one’s metamorphosis from confusion and pain to self-discovery and acceptance.

No matter if you are heterosexual, homosexual or asexual, this is a must read for everybody!

Thrill Me - Excerpt & Giveaway

Excerpt:

“You’re going to need some help,” Mayor Marsha told her. “There’s simply too much work for one person. Especially if we want the videos done by the end of summer.”
Maya nodded in agreement. “I’d prefer to do the editing myself. There’s an art to it.” And trusting someone else with her content would be difficult. “But I could use someone to help preproduction and during the shoots.”
“Yes. Plus an on-air talent person. Is that what it’s called? Or is host a better word?”
Maya felt a minor twinge. After all, in a perfect world, she would be hosting the videos. But the truth was, the camera didn’t love her. It liked her well enough, but not so much with the love. And in the business that was any kind of recorded media, passion was required. Which meant they needed someone who dazzled on-screen.
“Someone local?” she asked, thinking of all the sports celebrities in the area. Plus she knew that action movie superstar Jonny Blaze had just bought a ranch outside of town. If she could get him, that would be a coup.
“I had someone else in mind,” Mayor Marsha said.
As if on cue, the mayor’s assistant knocked on the door and then stepped into the room. “He’s here. Should I send him in?”
“Please do, Bailey,” Mayor Marsha told her.
Maya glanced up, curious as to whom the mayor would consider for such an important job. There was a lot on the line for the town and Mayor Marsha always put Fool’s Gold first. If he—
Maybe it was a trick of the light, Maya thought frantically as her eyes focused. Or a mistake. Because the tall, broad-shouldered, slightly scruffy guy walking toward them looked alarmingly familiar.
She took in the too-long curly hair, the three-day beard and the oversize, well-worn backpack slung over one shoulder. As if he’d just stepped off a pontoon plane direct from the Amazon forest. Or out of one of her dreams.
Delany Mitchell. Del.
The same Del who had stolen her virginity and her eighteen-year-old heart and had promised to love her forever. The Del who had wanted to marry her. The Del she’d walked out on because she’d been too young and too scared to take a chance on believing that she was the least bit lovable.
His jeans were so worn they looked as soft as a baby’s blanket. His white shirt hung loose, the long sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He was that irresistible combination of disheveled and confident. The ultimate in sex appeal.
How could he be back in town? Why hadn’t she known? And was it too late to bolt from the room?
Mayor Marsha smiled with pleasure, then rose. She crossed to the man and held out her arms. Del stepped into her embrace, hugged her, then kissed her cheek.
“You haven’t changed at all,” he said by way of greeting.
“And you’ve changed quite a bit. You’re successful and famous now, Delany. It’s good to have you back.”
Maya stood, not sure what she was supposed to do or say. Back as in back? No way, no how. She would have heard. Elaine would have warned her. All living, breathing, handsome proof to the contrary, she thought.
Ten years later, Del still looked good. Better than good.
She found herself fighting old feelings—both emotional and physical. She felt breathless and foolish and was grateful neither of them was looking at her. She had a second to get herself under control.
She’d been so young back then, she thought wistfully. So in love and so afraid. Sadly, fear had won out and she’d ended things with Del in a horrible way. Maybe now she would finally get the chance to explain and apologize. Assuming he was interested in either.
The mayor stepped back and motioned to her. “I think you remember Maya Farlow. Didn’t the two of you used to see each other?”
Del turned to glance at her. His expression was an ode to mild curiosity and nothing else. “We dated,” he said, dismissing their intense, passionate relationship with casual disregard. “Hello, Maya. It’s been a long time.”
“Del. Nice to see you.”
The words sounded normal enough, she told herself. He wouldn’t guess that her heart was pounding and her stomach had flopped over so many times she feared it would never be right again.
Was it that he didn’t remember the past, or had he truly put it all behind him? Was she just an old girlfriend he barely recalled? She would have thought that was impossible, and she would have been wrong.
He looked good, she thought, taking in what was new and what was exactly as it had been. His features were sharper, more honed. His body bigger. He’d filled out. Grown up. There was a confidence to his gaze. She’d fallen in love with a twenty-year-old, but before her was the adult male version.
The puzzle pieces fell into place. Her meeting and discussion with the mayor. What was expected of her as far as promoting the town. The need for a well-known person to host the videos.
Her lips formed the word No even as her brain held in the sound. She turned to Mayor Marsha.
“You want us to work together?”
The older woman smiled and took her seat at the conference table, then motioned for Del to sit, as well.
“Yes. Del’s back in town for a couple of months.”
“Just for the rest of the summer.” He settled in a chair that seemed too small for him. His grin was as easy as his posture. “You guilted me into helping.”
Mayor Marsha’s blue eyes twinkled with amusement. “I might have done what needed doing to get you to agree,” she admitted. She turned to Maya. “Del has experience with filming. He’s made some videos himself.”
He shrugged. “Nothing that special, but I do know my way around a camera.”
“As does Maya. I would like the two of you to collaborate on the project.”
Maya told herself to keep breathing. That later, when she was alone, she would scream or keen or throw something. Right now, she had to remain calm and act like a professional. She had a brand-new job she very much wanted to keep. She loved Fool’s Gold, and since moving back to town, she’d felt more content than she could remember ever feeling before. She didn’t want that to change.
She could handle Del being back. Obviously he was 100 percent over her. Which was a good thing. She was over him, too. Way over. So over as to almost not remembering him. Del who?

“Sounds like fun,” she said with a smile. “Let’s set up a meeting to brainstorm what has to be done.”

Eight Hundred Grapes - Review & Giveaway

Review by Melinda Garza
In Laura Dave's novel, Eight Hundred Grapes, one will discover all kinds of secrets. They are secrets that one shares and ones that one hides but we all know, secrets are really never secrets. Georgia grew up on her family's very respectable vineyard with her parents and twin brothers. Their family is complex yet as things start to fall apart, the love they encompass and the strength they hold is tested.

For one, Georgia's engagement to Ben is definitely tested when she learns first hand of a secret he has kept from her for a long time. What she can't believe is that she learned of it a week prior to their wedding and their move out of the country. Can Georgia accept and forgive this secret and still marry Ben or does she walk away?

Secondly, she becomes aware of another secret her mom holds, the truth behind the family vineyard, and news about her dads health.

Lastly, she also learns about her brothers troubling relationship and an event that can potentially tear the twins apart.

What becomes of this family and their imperfections? Mrs. Dave's novel brilliantly conveys the power of family and love and that with a families love, one can deal with the deepest of secrets.
This book, for me, was a page turner and I was hooked to this story from page one. Just as one thinks the story is going one path, one is turned towards another. It's raw but very much real. This is one read that definitely will not disappoint any reader.

Finding Lucas - New Cover Reveal & Giveaway

Review by Marlene Engel
Thirty two year old Jamie Ross has been in a stale relationship with Derek for three out of the last five years.  The carefree man that once wanted to travel the world with just a passport and the clothes on his back was now the poster boy for metro sexual men everywhere!  It’s amazing how much one person can change when their controlling mother comes sauntering back into their life.  Traits that were once considered endearing to Derek were now just plain annoying.  But Jamie makes no apologies for her taste in discount clothing, her job as an assistant producer for one of Chicago’s sleaziest talk shows or for her family’s eccentric lifestyle.  With the support of her family and friends, Jamie decides to put her big girl panties on and leave the safe lifestyle that she has been living with Derek.  And that’s exactly what it was … Derek’s lifestyle.

With Derek no longer in her life, Jamie sets out to find her long lost love, Lucas.  Okay, maybe love is a bit of an exaggeration.  Sex buddy is more of an operable term for it.   Although she hasn’t seen or talked to him in ten years, he has made a lasting impression on her.  But how would she find him?  Where would she start?  Then an idea came to her.  She was in the process of searching for long lost loves for a segment on the talk show she works for.  Why not use the same resources to find Lucas?   Of course there are some concerns.  Will he be the same guy she remembers?  Will he be disappointed when he sees her?  Will they rekindle what they had?  Come join Jamie on her adventure to find Lucas.

Finding Lucas is author Samantha Stroh Bailey’s debut novel.  It is a laugh out loud, funny, and extremely enjoyable book.  You will fall in love with Jamie and her zany family and friends.  Each character has their own quirky attributes which makes them so loveable, relatable and fun.  I could easily see my friends and myself doing something like this.  Jamie and I have similarities right down to our shared love for discount clothing.  Our friends are very similar whereas they are fun, down to earth and always there for us.  The book was extremely well written and I really enjoyed the comedic aspect of it.  I hated having to put the book down and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.  I look forward to reading future novels from this author and would definitely recommend this book to others.  I give this book a five out of five star rating!  Go out and get this book.  You will not be disappointed!
