The Winemaker - Blurb & Giveaway

Introducing Charmaine’s latest novel, The Winemaker

People like wine

There are people. And then there are people who are like wine. And I don’t mean that in the cliché-ish sense of ‘getting better with age’ or labeling like in generalizing, but in a unique personality kind of way. Winemaker Etán Perez-Cruz knows this too. Comparing the intoxicating Zenna with an alluring wine bouquet is the ultimate compliment a man of few words like Etán can bestow on a woman. Etán relies heavily on his sensory input to execute his job, but it goes a lot further than tasting, smelling, feeling, seeing, and even hearing. Creation is as much a process of heart than of intellect, and only the pivotal emotional touch can lead to the superstar wines that Etán fabricates.

“He’s not seriously proposing to recite a label like a poem, is he?” Zenna thinks as Etán asks her if she read the description of the wine he has offered her. But he has never been more serious. Because to Etán, Zenna is like the most exquisite wine in the world. Unequalled. She became the hedonistic pleasure of his senses, and something deeper that he cannot yet put his finger on. Which is why Etán’s wine label is, in fact, a love poem dedicated to Zenna when he says, “Showcases sweet, dark, plummy fruit. Wrapped in a cedary cloak of earth, tobacco, and cassis. Smooth and supple, framed with soft tannins. There is no need to cellar it. It should last well.”

Zenna learns quickly, and soon pins a label on Etán’s younger rebel brother, Luca: “Perfectly open and huge, with deep plum and black fruit smothering both the bouquet and palate. Huge berry flavors and excellent balancing acids and tannins. A wine distinguished as a bruiser with charm. While it shows very little in common with Rhône-style Syrah, for a Chilean version it rocks.”

Sometimes a woman has to read between the lines, or in the case of The Winemaker she has to interpret the cultivar… and how it evolves. I totally agree with Etán. People are like wine. Sometimes it’s a sophisticated Cabernet Sauvignon with lingering tannins; a modern Carmenere with new world class; a fun fruity white; or a cheeky Viognier. Whatever the case, every variety is a complex and intricate combination of characteristics that offers an explosion of sensory experience and a lasting impression, each a unique poem worthy of capturing in a timeless label.
