I Know You're There - Review & Giveaway

Blurb:
Jill Bradley is a twenty-four-year-old nurse whose life is going great; she has established herself in her new career and she’s looking forward to getting engaged to her high school sweetheart. But faced with a watershed moment, she has to deal with simultaneous family tragedy, injury, and betrayal, and feels it’s way too much to cope with. In a moment of despair, Jill books a trip to a Caribbean island in an effort to escape. While she finds respite and romance, her problems have also packed their own suitcase.

Helen Bradley, Jill’s mother dedicated her entire life to her family like many mothers in the 1970’s and 80’s. Despite her best efforts, however, she hasn’t always been able to be the type of mother she wished she could be. She has a secret she was hoping would just go away, but it won’t. If she doesn’t share it with Jill it might bring her daughter more harm.

I Know You’re There is a mother-daughter journey, celebrating the highs and delving into the lows of family life. Can the power of love heal all things?

Review by K.T Sullivan

Over two months in 1995, a mother and daughter, suffer much loss. In alternating chapters, Helen and Jill, her daughter, tell their stories. Jill, a nurse, has been severely injured in a car accident. Worse, the passengers in the other car died, leaving their newborn an orphan. Helen has been diagnosed with cancer, but doesn’t want to burden her recovering daughter. By Christmas, Helen has died and her husband is seeing another woman. Jill decides, on the spur of the moment, to go away. She travels to Triton Island with her mother’s journal to keep her company. Helen’s spirit travels with her, hoping Jill will fully recover from her physical and emotional wounds. She meets a man and begins to regain some of what she’s lost.

The title is telling to anyone who has lost a parent. Jill senses her mother’s presence and feels comforted by it. At any age, the death of a parent is jarring. The child is adrift without the love, support, and true anchor. Jill is in her twenties and still needs her mother’s advice. The discovery of the journal helps her to heal and move on. This is a quick read and seems to be a tribute to the author’s mother. A fitting one too.
